Ruth Shann has appeared as counsel for the defence in:

  • murder trials and pleas in the Supreme Court;
  • conviction and sentence appeals in the Court of Appeal;
  • trials and pleas in the County Court; and
  • various matters in the Magistrates' Court.

Ruth has also appeared as junior counsel in murder, manslaughter, police corruption, sexual offences, contempt and drug matters in the High Court, Supreme Court, County Court and at committal level.

Ruth has drafted legal submissions for the High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, Federal Court and County Court.

She has appeared in the Coroner's Court in both Victoria and New Zealand.

She was junior counsel assisting the Board of the 2015 Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry.

Ruth was appointed a Honourary Fellow of the University of Melbourne Law School in 2016 for her contribution teaching Evidence and Proof in its JD program.

She achieved third place on the first class honours list in law at the University of Melbourne in 2004.

Ruth is a Victoria Legal Aid Criminal Trial Preferred barrister and holds an Indictable Crime Certificate.
