James practises in all areas of commercial law, including corporate law, insolvency law, equity and trusts. He also maintains a criminal law practice, particularly prosecuting on behalf of regulators and defending companies and individuals in proceedings that involve WHS, planning, environment, and building offences, and corporate crime. 

Since coming to the Bar, James has appeared in the Supreme (civil), County (civil and criminal), and Magistrates' (civil and criminal) courts, VCAT, and the Building Practitioners Board (as counsel assisting).  

Before coming to the Bar, James practised as a solicitor in the commercial litigation group at Herbert Smith Freehills in Melbourne. While at HSF, he worked mainly on large commercial disputes, including class actions. James earlier practised as a criminal defence lawyer at Galbally & O'Bryan. While there, he mainly acted for clients who were being, or had been, investigated by ASIC.

Before practising law, James was a Sydney-based investment banker. He has a good understanding of AFS licensing, the securities markets, and the methodologies used to value businesses, equities, derivatives, and other securities.

James holds a Bachelor of Civil Law (Distinction) from the University of Oxford.

James read with Andrew Palmer SC and Carl Möller. His senior mentor is Anthony Young QC.
