Profile

James practises in all areas of commercial law, insolvency, equity and trusts. He also maintains a criminal law practice, with a focus on regulatory proceedings (such as OHS, planning, and building offences) and commercial crime.

Since coming to the Bar, James has appeared in the Supreme (civil), County (civil and criminal), and Magistrates' (civil and criminal) courts, VCAT, and the Building Practitioners Board (as counsel assisting).  

Before coming to the Bar, James practised as a solicitor in the commercial litigation group at Herbert Smith Freehills in Melbourne. While at HSF, he worked on a variety of commercial disputes, including class actions. James earlier practised as a criminal defence lawyer at Galbally & O'Bryan. While there, his clients included those who were being, or had been, investigated by ASIC.

Before practising law, James was a Sydney-based investment banker. He advised on M&As, divestments and raising capital. James has a good understanding of AFS licensing, the securities markets, and the methodologies used to value securities, derivatives and assets.

James holds a Bachelor of Civil Law (Distinction) from the University of Oxford.

James read with Andrew Palmer SC and Carl Möller. His senior mentor is Anthony Young QC.
