John S Bailey returned to the Victorian Bar and to Foley’s List after many years spent in dual careers as an Australian Diplomat and an international business executive.

John Bailey is a Nationally Accredited Mediator with extensive experience in the international arena, representing government and private clients, as a key negotiator, mediator, advisor and arbitrator.John’s experience in the public sector is complemented by a highly successful career as head of the JBA Group, an investment and legal advisory and consultancy company.  John provided legal advice to both government departments and multi-national companies,  in jurisdictions as varied as the United States, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Denmark and France, in matters concerning territorial disputes; commercial and financial disputes; industrial relations; property and building disputes; probate and, corporate structure, governance and compliance.

John has held positions of Legal Adviser to the OECD in Paris and WHO in Geneva.

His exceptional skills as a mediator and facilitator were honed over many years as a diplomat, where he had carriage of negotiating the successful outcome to the Law of the Sea Conference and resolutions to numerous international disputes, including notably, the Australian Government’s negotiations with the Indonesian Government regarding the rights to the seabed in the East Timor Sea. He has successfully mediated complex, cross-jurisdictional, multi-party industrial disputes with unions, corporations and government agencies.

John has also represented clients in commercial matters at international tribunals.

John practises in International Law, Law of the Sea, Commercial Law, Property Law, Employment Law and Equity.

He is available to act as a mediator and as an arbitrator for individual clients, business or government agencies.
