PROFILE

Marcus Dempsey has practised in criminal law for 20 years, 14 of those as counsel. He appears in trials and pleas in all jurisdictons, as well as undertaking appellate work. He also appears in matters involving the Serious Sex Offenders (Detention and Supervision) Act, the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Fitness to be Tried) Act and for examinees in compulsory examinations conducted by various statutory bodies. 

Between 2010 and 2014 he was employed as a Senior Public Defender at Victoria Legal Aid, where he also delivered training on complex criminal issues and advocacy.

Marcus has been selected as a member of the Victoria Legal Aid Criminal Trial Preferred Barrister List and holds a Victorian Bar Indictable Crime Certificate.

He is a teacher with the Australian Advocacy Institute, teaching in trial practice at Monash University and is a mentor for Melbourne University Juris Doctor programme. Marcus also teaches at the Bar Readers course.
