Matt accepts briefs in all areas of criminal, quasi-criminal, and administrative law matters in regional and metropolitan areas. This includes occupational health and safety offences, disciplinary tribunal proceedings, regulatory matters, inquests and judicial reviews.

Matt is reading with Mark Gumbleton and his senior mentor is Robert Richter QC.

Background

Matt holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) and was the recipient of the Leo Cussen Advocacy Award in 2016.  At the commencement of his career, Matt was a legal researcher to a number of barristers in Melbourne.

Prior to being called to the Bar, Matt was the Associate to his Honour Judge C Ryan at the County court of Victoria between 2017 and 2020. He gained practical experience in summary crime, indictable crime, and occupational health and safety matters including:

  • stay applications;
  • pre-trial arguments concerning the Evidence Act 2008;
  • criminal trials (including historical offences and long trials);
  • quasi-criminal trials (concerning the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004); 
  • indictable plea hearings for state and federal offences;
  • interlocutory appeals;
  • bail applications;
  • conviction appeals from the Magistrates’ court;
  • sentence appeals from the Magistrates’ court; and
  • Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997 hearings.
