Profile

Cam took silk in November 2018 after 13 years at the Bar. 

He is a very experienced commercial barrister with a broad commercial law practice.  He has  particular expertise in regulatory proceedings, trade practices and consumer protection, product liability, corporations and securities law including directors' duties and trusts disputes.

His practice also includes class actions, professional negligence, administrative law, insolvency, property and retail leases disputes, intellectual property disputes, contractual disputes and defamation.

He is briefed by private law firms, government lawyers and directly by in-house Counsel.

Cam is regularly included in the "Best Lawyers List for Australia", most recently in the areas of Commercial Law and Real Property Law.

Cam regularly advises and appears in Supreme Court and Federal Court matters including urgent freezing order applications and other injunctive relief.  He also increasingly undertakes matters in other jurisdictions including the Supreme Courts of New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia. 

Cam is a member of the Victorian Legal Admissions Committee.

Cam's recent and current briefs include:

  • acting for ASIC in relation to civil penalty proceedings in the Federal Court against Westpac Banking Corporation for alleged breaches of the National Credit Code;
  • acting on behalf of a cryptocurrency firm to recover assets held in bank accounts in Bahamas including obtaining urgent freezing orders;
  • acting in relation to alleged fraud and breaches of duty concerning commercial arrangements between Hungry Panda and EASI, specialist Asian delivery platforms including obtaining temporary stay of proceedings;
  • acting for ASIC in relation to civil penalty proceedings in the Federal Court against AMP Group entities for alleged unconscionable conduct and other claims arising from fees and premiums charged to superannuation members;
  • acting for ASIC in relation to civil penalty proceedings in the Federal Court against Mercer Financial for alleged misleading conduct and breaches of FDS provisions of the Corporations Act;
  • acting in a joint venture dispute in the New South Wales Supreme Court concerning two large residential properties.

Cam obtained  excellent academic results in both his Masters of Laws at Melbourne University and his Bachelor of Laws at Monash University . 

Prior to signing the Bar Roll, Cam worked as a commercial lawyer and litigator at Corrs Chambers Westgarth (with a particular focus on competition and trade practices law) and Slater and Gordon, working in all jurisdictions.

Cam is a founding member of the Asian Australian Lawyers Association (AALA – aala.org.au). AALA is the first incorporated association in Australia to focus on the growing number of Asian Australian lawyers in the legal profession, as well as other lawyers with an interest in Asia.
