Profile

Hetty has a broad practice in public, environmental, common law and criminal and regulatory law. She acts for both private clients and government agencies and is available to appear in all courts and tribunals. Hetty has a particular interest and expertise in First Nations’ legal issues. 

 

Public and Administrative Law 

 

Hetty accepts briefs to appear in all areas of public and administrative law, including migration law and merits review in VCAT and the ART, Mental Health Tribunal and judicial review proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia. She also has experience appearing in tenancy matters in the VCAT.

Native Title and Aboriginal Land Rights Law & Environmental Law

Hetty previously worked as a solicitor at the Central Land Council in Alice Springs working with remote communities in the Barkly region in the Northern Territory. has experience advising native title holders and representative under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) and the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1982 (NT). She advised on and negotiated Indigenous Land Use Agreements, protection of indigenous cultural heritage under the Heritage Act 2011 (NT) and commercial advice under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit Scheme. Hetty also has experience advising on Environmental Effects Statements and Planning Permits. 

Criminal and Regulatory Law

Hetty accepts briefs in all areas of criminal law, including in regulatory prosecutions, professional disciplinary proceedings, inquests and inquiries. She has been briefed by the Environment Protection Authority for advice and prosecution of environmental crime under the Environment Protection Act 2017 (Vic). 

Hetty is regularly briefed to appear in complex summary and indictable criminal matters, including in contested hearings, appeals, committals, bail applications  and pleas. She has appeared in the Supreme Court of Victoria and the Northern Territory. She is also frequently briefed in family violence intervention order matters, including appeals in the County Court.
