James accepts briefs in public and administrative law, and criminal law.
Before coming to the Bar, James was an Associate Public Defender (Civil Justice) in Victoria Legal Aid Chambers where he gained extensive advocacy experience as in-house counsel.
James has frequently appeared in the County and Supreme Courts of Victoria where he has substantial experience in supervision order matters under the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997. James also has extensive Tribunal experience in VCAT and the ART, appearing in a range of areas including guardianship and administration order proceedings, NDIS reviews and tenancy matters.
Prior to his time as in-house counsel, James practised criminal law for a number of years at Victoria Legal Aid, obtaining specialist accreditation in criminal law through the Law Institute of Victoria.
James holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Flinders University and a Juris Doctor from Melbourne University.
James is reading with Amanda Burnnard and his senior mentor is Emrys Nekvapil SC.
