Profile
James Moutsias accepts briefs in all areas of criminal and quasi-criminal law, as well as administrative and common law.
Prior to coming to the bar, James was a legal academic at Monash University, where he conducted extensive research in administrative law, discrimination law, personal injury and class actions. He also worked as a sessional academic at Deakin and ACU, undertaking teaching and marking duties.
As part of his criminal practice, James appears in a broad range of summary and indictable matters, including appeals, contested hearings, committals, bail applications and pleas. He has experience in sex matters and both Family Violence and Personal Safety Intervention Order proceedings.
James previously worked at boutique criminal firm Kaczmarek Grigor lawyers.
James has a special interest in Discrimination Law. He taught Discrimination Law at ACU and is a member of the Australian Discrimination Law Network.
James also has a developed understanding of Artificial Intelligence. He previously worked in policy at the Department of Education (Victoria) where he contributed to the Framework for Generative AI in Schools. While working at Monash University, James co-authored a paper on the use and legality of AI in government decision-making.
James is reading with Michael McGrath and his senior mentor is Dermot Dann KC.
