Profile
John has extensive and broad experience as an advocate in a variety of courts and tribunals, with a focus on criminal and administrative proceedings.
This includes regular appearances in trials, appeals, committals and summary hearings, quasi-criminal proceedings (including extradition and mutual assistance requests, proceeds of crime applications, regulatory review proceedings and applications for prerogative relief) and other matters.
John has also appeared and provided advice in coronial inquiries, civil and planning applications, mental health review proceedings and intervention order applications.
In criminal matters, John has experience with both defence and prosecution work. Most recently, he was a Crown Prosecutor for the State of Victoria. Prior to coming to the Bar, he held senior roles at Victoria Legal Aid, the Commonwealth DPP and Office of Public Prosecutions.
John has particular interest and expertise in the interaction between criminal and public law. He has regularly provided advice on alleged breaches of federal statutory obligations and government functions and on the implications of tribunal decisions.
