Profile
Josh practises primarily in criminal law, with particular expertise in contested hearings and appellate work. He accepts briefs in criminal, quasi-criminal and family law matters.
Josh brings a broad perspective to criminal law, having practised on both sides of the system as a solicitor advocate at a leading criminal defence firm and as a lawyer in the Higher Court Appeals team at the Office of Public Prosecutions.
Immediately before coming to the Bar, Josh was a Solicitor Advocate at Doogue + George Criminal Defence Lawyers where he appeared regularly in the Magistrates’ and County Courts conducting contested hearings, committal proceedings, contested IVO hearings, appeals, pleas and bail applications. Josh has experience providing written submissions for regulatory and professional disciplinary matters.
At the OPP, Josh appeared and instructed in the Court of Appeal, drafted written cases on sentence and conviction appeals, and advised the Director following sentence reviews. Josh has experience in trial work in particular, and accepts both led and unled appellate briefs.
Before entering private practice, Josh served as Associate to the Honourable Judge Lyon at the County Court of Victoria and later as Senior Associate to the Criminal Reserve List.
Josh holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) from the University of Melbourne.
Josh is reading with Sam Tovey and his senior mentor is Colin Mandy SC.
