Louis Andrews

Louis has a broad practice in criminal law and public law, and is regularly briefed for both advice and advocacy.  In his criminal law practice, he accepts briefs to defend and prosecute.  

As counsel, Louis has appeared in the Court of Appeal, in complex plea hearings and committals, and acted in judicial review proceedings.  He has appeared in County Court criminal trials, led and unled.  Louis is regularly briefed to appear for government agencies in sensitive matters, and has particular experience in subpoena and public interest immunity litigation, as well as suppression order applications.

Louis appears in supervision order proceedings arising under the Serious Offenders Act 2018 and the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997.  He also accepts briefs to advise and appear in relation to regulatory prosecutions.

Before coming to the Bar, Louis was a Principal Solicitor with the Office of Public Prosecutions’ Policy & Specialised Legal Division.  He provided advice in areas including administrative law, extraditions and coronial referrals.  Louis specialised in the intersection of the criminal law and media law, including contempt and suppression orders. 

Louis was previously a Senior Solicitor in the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office Police Advisory Branch.  He acted in sensitive matters, and advised on issues including police powers and administrative law.

Louis is a reporter with the Victorian Reports.  He is also a member of the Australian Academy of Forensic Sciences and was previously a legal affairs reporter for The Canberra Times.

Louis holds an Indictable Crime Certificate (ICC).
