Matthew Cookson graduated from Deakin University with first class honours in law and philosophy. His academic accolades include the Alfred Deakin Scholarship for Academic Merit, a place on the Dean’s Merit List, a speaker’s prize in the Vis Moot and subject prizes in commercial law and civil procedure.
Matthew began his legal career working as a solicitor at Freehills in a broad range of commercial areas including commercial contracting, trade marks and litigation.
In 2010 Matthew became the Associate to Judge Thornton in the Criminal Division of the County Court. He assisted in a variety of trials, pleas and appeals and also provided research support particularly regarding the Evidence Act and Criminal Procedure Act, both of which came into force on his first day in that role.
More recently, Matthew has lectured in Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure and Witness Examination at Deakin University.
Matthew holds a Victorian Bar Indictable Crime Certificate.
