Tom Smedley is currently undertaking the September 2025 Victorian Bar Readers Course and will sign the Bar Roll on 25th of September upon the successful completion of the course.

Tom accepts briefs in criminal, quasi-criminal, public and administrative law matters.

Before coming to the Bar, Tom was a Trial Advocate at Legal Aid NT. He regularly appeared in the Local and Supreme Courts in pleas, bail applications, trials and mental impairment matters.

He was previously an Associate at Slades & Parsons (Victoria), managing serious indictable matters including sexual offences, drug charges and violent crime. In this role, Tom frequently appeared in the Magistrates’, Children’s and County Courts. He also instructed in County and Supreme Court trials, as well as Court of Appeal proceedings.

Tom has also practised in New Zealand and the United Kingdom across criminal defence, criminal tax and commercial litigation.

He is reading with Christopher Terry and senior mentor is Dermot Dann KC.
