Profile
Liz Main has broad experience in common law and commercial law, having previously worked as a judge’s associate to Judge Clayton, Judge Marks and Judge Trapnell across the common law and commercial divisions of the County Court of Victoria.
Her experience traverses the full range of common law proceedings, including privacy, institutional abuse, intentional torts, police torts, negligence, WorkCover and TAC matters, with familiarity in jury trials, causes, serious injury applications and interlocutory disputes.
As a former legal affairs journalist for the Australian Financial Review and, most recently, the Associate to the Judge in Charge of the Defamation List in the County Court, Liz also has expertise in defamation and media law. She has been at the forefront of recent decisions on the new serious harm element and concerns notice requirements. Liz is also a contributor to the defamation chapter of Fitzroy Legal Service’s Law Handbook, to be published in 2025.
She has appeared both led and unled in the Supreme Court, and unled in the County Court, Magistrates' Court and VCAT.
She has also worked for Slater and Gordon Lawyers where she garnered experience with shareholder and bushfire class actions.
Liz is a member of the Victorian Bar News Editorial Committee. She was a member of Victorian Women Lawyers’ Publications Committee for four years, including presiding as co-chair for two years.
She holds Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Melbourne.
