Leading Tax Law Barristers - Doyle's Guide

Congratulations to list members Frank O'Loughlin KC, Simon Tisher, Andrew de Wijn and Gareth Redenbach who were recognised as Leading Tax Law Barristers for Victoria in 2022, by Doyle's Guide. 

FRANK O'LOUGHLIN KC

Frank has been a member of the Bar since 2003 practising principally in taxation and commercial law.

Before joining the Bar, Frank worked for 12 years with the Australian Taxation Office in the technical (assessing and compliance) and management/ administration branches. He was a Director in the Melbourne Office of the ATO when he left to join Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

In 1987 Frank joined Corrs Chambers Westgarth, becoming a partner in 1994.  Subsequently, he became a Practice Group Leader and was a Board Member when he left the firm to join the Bar.   His practice was principally a taxation and corporate and commercial law practice.


SIMON TISHER

Simon Tisher has been a barrister at the Victorian Bar since May 2003. He is well known and respected as a barrister and within the tax profession. 

Most of Simon’s experience at the Bar pertains to tax matters (state and federal) and matters related to taxation: superannuation, insolvency, bankruptcy and professional indemnity claims (commonly involving tax advice). He acts for taxpayers and for the Australian Taxation Office, led and unled, in disputes ranging from small individual matters to large corporate tax disputes. Simon has sound experience in commercial litigation matters and has a busy advisory practice. Simon also has an interest in National Disability Insurance Scheme matters. 


 ANDREW DE WIJN

Andrew de Wijn specialises in federal and state tax matters. As well as appearing in courts and tribunals, Andrew provides technical tax advice to clients and assists in dealing with the ATO, particularly in relation to ruling requests and objections as well as settlement negotiations.

Before coming to the Bar, Andrew worked for 8 years as a solicitor with Greenwoods & Freehills specialising in income tax for large Australian and multinational businesses. Andrew’s work included providing advice, structuring transactions, reviewing and drafting transaction documents, applying for and negotiating rulings with the ATO, and litigation.


 GARETH REDENBACK

Gareth accepts briefs in commercial, taxation, corporations, administrative and equity matters. He has advocated in all trial divisions in Victoria as well as in the High Court, Full Federal Court and Victorian Court of Appeal.  He is regularly briefed to appear and advise individually and as junior counsel. 

Gareth came to the Bar in 2016 after roles as in-house counsel (international tax and transfer pricing) for the Macquarie Group based in New York, a senior associate at Minter Ellison and in the international tax department of PwC. He has significant experience in general law and regulatory matters for the financial services, public-private partnership and energy industries.  Specifically, Gareth’s prior experience sees him uniquely positioned to assist both Australian outbound investors and inbound investors (particularly from the US and Asia-Pacific regions) given his familiarity with the commercial, regulatory and tax drivers of investments and divestments.  Gareth also has a particular interest in cryptocurrency and has worked with a number of businesses and high net worth individuals in this space.
