Gavin Silbert KC obtained degrees in Law and Classics from the University of Western Australia before undertaking post graduate degrees at the Universities of London and Oxford. From 1972 he practised commercial law in Western Australia. On moving to Melbourne he commenced practice with Phillips Fox and Masel before moving to Freehills. He signed the Bar Roll in 1985 . He practised in criminal law doing both prosecution and defence as well as administrative and commercial law. He took silk in 2007 and was appointed Chief Crown Prosecutor in 2008 which position he occupied until 2018. He has had an extensive trial practice and an extensive appellate court practice with many appearances before the High Court of Australia. Since 2018 he has practised concentrating on pro bono briefs and matters of public interest. He acted for many people in connection with Robodebt and has acted without fee for many indigant litigants and citizens oppressed by government and regulatory administrative action.
