The Defence of Mental Impairment – What to do and when

In this session, Tim Marsh, Maddie Lees & Thomas Bell provides a detailed guide on handling cases involving the defence of mental impairment in criminal proceedings. They take a look at case studies and references to relevant legal provisions to best navigate the process of defending clients with mental impairments.


 

Tim Marsh practices in all areas of crime, but he has a strong practice in mental impairment and disability law. His work at first instance and on appeal in this area have helped clarify and reshape how the Victorian Courts treat offenders with mental illnesses.

Maddie Lees briefs in criminal, quasi criminal, public and administrative law matters and has had carriage of a range of matters including property, drug, dishonesty, driving and violence.

Thomas Bell practices in criminal, quasi-criminal, administrative, and disciplinary matters. He has represented clients charged with murder, culpable driving, large commercial quantity drug trafficking, dangerous driving causing death, significant fraud charges and attempt to pervert the course of justice.
